P10 INIA Quilamapuu & Precision Agriculture Program (PROGAP) CL

The Precision Agriculture Program is a National Program related to the Precision Agricultural Research run by the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Chile. It is a well-known program in South America, with activities and cooperative research with many countries around the world. The National Agriculture Research Institute (INIA) (http://www.inia.cl) is the research institution of the government of Chile whose mission it is to create, develop, adapt, and finally make the technology transfer of scientific knowledge to product in an effort to improve agronomic production in Chile and in other countries. Since 1997, INIA initiated its National Precision Agriculture Program (kms.progapinia.cl) in close cooperation with local and international institutions and companies with the objective to be pioneer in the variable management technology development in the region, emphasising vineyards and orchards. The introduction of technologies such as computer vision, nondestructive sensors, remote sensing, and ICT, among others, has fostered increases in field efficiency, reduced negative environmental impacts of agriculture, and improved the quality of production. In addition, the remote sensing related to field segmentation using different vegetation indexes and their relationships with production variables has been one of the big successes of the program, which has been instrumental in establishing more than 40% of the total vineyard area grown for export (~40,000 ha).

Major activities in CROPS

In its research activities in WP 4, INIA will be active in vineyards to test the development of ripe sensors vis-a-vis fruit quality and variability under field conditions. For WP 6 activities, INIA will focus in the field on the requirements for developing the harvesting system and will perform system evaluations under vineyard conditions. In both WPs, INIA will interact intimately with the other institutions involved in those WPs and will undertake all necessary training and required dissemination.
