The sensing systems to be researched and developed in this WP are intended to provide the other CROpS WPs with the information necessary to enable them to perform many of their application tasks. The work to be carried out will start with the delineation of the precise requirements and specifications for the sensing systems (T2.1). Thereafter – on the basis of the delineation step – a series of tasks will follow that will aim to provide solutions to complex application problems related to detection, localization, parametric characterization of fruits (T2.3), detection and classification of objects in plantation and forests (T2.4), evaluation of fruit ripeness (T2.5), diseases detection in field crops (T2.6), and estimation of ground bearing capacity (T2.7). The tasks of this WP will make available an amalgamation of both hardware and algorithms. In this WP, many kinds of sensors and of sensor combinations will be investigated, and several methodological approaches, like active perception (T2.2), will be used. Formulation of evaluation methodologies (T2.8) and extensive benchmarking (T2.9) will complete the work of this WP2.
